Some common symptoms of excessive ear wax are itching of the ear, dizziness, pain, ringing and hearing loss.

To avoid long term damage to the ear, wax removal should not be attempted at home.

We offer two types of ear wax removal.

Micro-suction is an ear cleaning technique using a suction device, microscope and loupes; this is a gentle, water-free procedure to remove ear wax, dry skin and foreign bodies from your ears. Micro-suction is the safest way to perform removal using a wand type extension tube which gently removes ear wax from the canal.

Ear irrigation is the process of flushing the external ear canal with luke warm sterile water for removal of ear wax, dry skin and debris from you ears. Prior to your appointment, please apply olive oil directly into your ear so that wax can be removed more easily and quickly(this is only for ear irrigation; please don’t apply olive oil if you are attending for micro-suction).

What are the benefits of ear wax removal?

Ear wax removal, also known as cerumen management, can offer several benefits. Ear wax, or cerumen, is a natural substance produced by the glands in the ear canal, and it usually helps protect and lubricate the ear. However, in some cases, ear wax can build up and cause issues. Here are the benefits of ear wax removal:

Improved Hearing: Excessive ear wax can block the ear canal, leading to reduced hearing. Removal of the accumulated wax can result in an immediate improvement in hearing ability.

Prevention of Ear Infections: Impacted ear wax can create a favorable environment for bacterial or fungal growth, increasing the risk of ear infections. Regular removal of excess ear wax can help prevent such infections.

Relief from Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears): Buildup of ear wax can sometimes contribute to tinnitus, a condition characterised by a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in the ears. Removal of the wax may alleviate these symptoms.

Prevention of Dizziness and Vertigo: In some cases, excessive ear wax can affect the balance organs in the inner ear, leading to dizziness or vertigo. Removing the impacted wax can help restore balance.

Improvement in Ear Discomfort: When ear wax becomes impacted or pushes against the eardrum, it can cause discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the ear. Removal of the wax can alleviate these sensations.

Facilitation of Ear Examinations: For healthcare professionals conducting ear examinations, clear visualisation of the ear canal and eardrum is essential. Removing excess ear wax allows for a better view and accurate diagnosis of any ear-related issues.
